Challenges of Creativity
Creativity is one of the most pivotal aspects of a small business owner, which is why it is so important to surround yourself with new people and experiences. I find that while balancing life as a college student, small business owner, and working part-time, it is easy to fall into days of repetition. Within these days, I feel burnt out and exhausted, making it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle and successful business. There are days I think I can’t do both, or I am simply just not motivated.
During the summer of 2023, I was selected to be a Bloch Summer Entrepreneurship Scholar at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Throughout that 2 week intensive course, I had the opportunity to meet with entrepreneurs, business owners, and marketers of the greater Kansas City area. This course was ultimately one of the best experiences I’ve had. I was able to build a network with people that had similar interests as me, while being able to ask questions and get feedback from those who have already been down that path. The most impactful pieces of feedback I walked away with was, “Don’t dumb your ideas down. Be unreasonable” This piece of feedback really resonated with me because I constantly think, “Oh I could do this! No actually maybe that’s silly.” And sometimes even the most unreasonable ideas are the ones people are looking for.
All in all, creativity is different for everyone. We all go through setbacks, mental health situations, and ultimately the way I have worked through mine, are by talking to the people that want to help. Not necessarily the people that care, but the ones that are willing to help you make a change. There is a difference between caring and doing, and I think that by putting yourself in a place where you can get the support you need is so incredibly important, and impactful to you as a person and your business.
One of the hardest challenges I have faced as a business owner is building my brand. I went through so many color palettes and themes during the first year of running my social media accounts.
A service I like to offer to my clients is a business board curated to their personality and product/service clientele. The most pivotal aspect is staying authentic to who you are as not only a business owner but as an individual as well.
Another key factor as a start up is knowing that if you don't put anything into it, you won't get anything out of it. Personalized apparel with your business name/logo is a great way to advertise - and even a potential conversation starter! My Etsy features products tailored to business owners creating their branding.
